Our Approach to Sustainable & Responsible Timber Manufacturing
At Big Tuff Timber Products in Auckland, NZ, we believe that responsible timber manufacturing and genuine environmental care are not competing priorities. They are part of the same commitment. Our operations supply businesses across the North Island and South Island, and across every part of our business we work actively to reduce waste, lower our environmental footprint and support the sustainable management of New Zealand's timber resources.
Our environmental policy shapes the decisions we make on the production floor every single day, from how we source and process timber through to how we handle every residue and end-of-life product.

Our Core Environmental Philosophy
Everything we do is guided by three principles:
Reduce
We work to minimise waste and reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing at every stage, from how we run our production lines through to how we manage the residues our operations generate.
Recycle
When pallets reach the end of their serviceable life, every component is assessed before anything is discarded. Parts that can be salvaged are returned to production. Components beyond repair are chipped and redirected to garden cover, playground surfaces, farm mulch and road infrastructure, ensuring virtually no timber from our facility ends up as landfill waste.
Reuse
We actively look for ways to extend the life of the timber products we manufacture and repair, getting more value from the timber already in circulation rather than defaulting to replacement.
New Zealand's Only Pallet Manufacturer With an On-Site Sawmill
Our Big Tuff Sawmills operation gives us a level of control over the full timber lifecycle that no other pallet company in New Zealand can match. Every residue generated during milling, including bark, wood chip and log edgings, feeds directly into our on-site grinding operation. The processed outputs are then supplied to playgrounds, schools, farms, motorway projects and the residential garden market.
Sawdust produced during manufacturing is collected and supplied to companies that use it in products such as animal bedding and composite timber goods. Nothing that enters our site leaves as avoidable waste.
What We Commit to Every Day
Comply With All Environmental Laws & Standards
All employees are required to comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations as a baseline expectation.
Actively Manage Environmental Risk
We identify and manage environmental risks within our operations and apply best practice principles to prevent pollution at every stage of production.
Collaborate With Customers & Suppliers
We work with our customers and suppliers to develop packaging and recycling solutions that reduce waste and support sustainable forest growth across New Zealand.
Measure & Improve Our Performance
We set measurable environmental objectives, monitor performance against them and conduct regular reviews to ensure we are always moving forward.
Our commitment to the environment does not stop at compliance. We invest in staff training, management reviews and ongoing research to reduce our footprint year on year.
